Celebrating Chinese New Year !

C'est l'annĂ©e du Singe !  (It's the year of the Monkey !)

This week, we have been celebrating Chinese New Year in KS1 & KS2 French lessons.

We began by learning how to name the 12 animal signs of the Chinese zodiac.

This was a great opportunity to have some fun with French phonics and practice the sound "ch" (sounds like "shhh!" in English).

Have a listen to some Y3 pupils naming these animals in French with fantastic pronunciation :

KS1 and lower KS2 pupils then labelled the 12 animal signs of the Chinese zodiac in French.

In upper KS2, the pupils also labelled the 12 animal signs of the Chinese zodiac in French.  They then used adjectives to describe the colour of each animal.  Unlike in the English language, most adjectives come after the noun in French. Adectives must also agree with their nouns, which means that they have to show if they are masculine or feminine and singular or plural to match the noun.  The pupils enjoyed this "grammar challenge".

Finally, upper KS2 pupils said what their Chinese zodiac sign is in French:
