Mardi Gras! Tu aimes les crêpes?

This week, pupils enjoyed celebrating Shrove Tuesday in their primary French lesson!

Lower KS2 pupils (Y3 & Y4) practised expressing likes and dislikes about various pancake toppings.

Upper KS2 pupils (Y5 & Y6) also practised expressing likes and dislikes about pancake toppings. This was a perfect opportunity for the older children to recap some core grammar points about Je/J', gender of nouns, forming plural nouns and à + le = au.  They were then encouraged to extend their answers by using conjunctions, intensifiers and adjectives.  The children enjoyed having a “group chat” in French about what pancake toppings they liked and disliked.
They concluded the lesson by producing some written work about their opinions and presented it to the rest of the class!

Bravo les enfants et bon appétit!

Le monde du travail

In KS2 French lessons this term, pupils have enjoyed learning about the “Le monde du travail” (The world of work).

Focusing on people in society who help us, pupils have learnt how to name various jobs (in both the masculine and feminine forms) and places of work in French.  They were introduced to the verb travailler (to work) have learnt how to ask and answer questions about what jobs other people do, where they work and express opinions about this.  They were surprised to learn that “a” is omitted before the name of a profession in the French language.

The pupils concluded this topic by expressing their own future career aspirations in both written form and orally to the rest of the class!  They made great progress throughout this topic and have produced some impressive sentences!

Et toi?  Que veux-tu être quand tu seras grand?
(And you?  What do you want to be when you grow up?)

Bravo les enfants!

La vie scolaire

As an introduction to our French topic, La vie scolaire (School Life), KS2 children enjoyed learning about school life in France and comparing and contrasting this to school life in England.  They were suprised to learn that French children don't wear a school uniform!  We looked at some French primary school websites together and they also found these following BBC French video clips about visiting a French school interesting:

After developing their intercultural understanding about the French education system, the children progressed by learning how to talk about various issues surrounding school life, including learning how to ask and answer questions about which school subjects they enjoy and don’t enjoy and express simple opinions.

The children then went on to learn how to describe their school uniform, say how they travel to school and name classroom objects.  They learnt how to tell the time and then looked at authentic school timetables.

At the end of this topic, UKS2 produced some impressive pieces of writing about their own school in French:

Some fantastic descriptions about school uniform were also produced!  LKS2 children simply drew and labelled individual items of their school uniform in French whilst UKS2 children produced extended descriptions of their school uniform and presented this information in both written form and orally to the rest of the class. They expressed opinions about their school uniform and developed their use of adjectival agreements by describing the colour of each item of their school uniform!

Bravo les enfants!
